This sketch, made on location in the Peak District village of Hartington, was later painted up into a wintery watercolour. I mention it because the sketch was produced in September, when the trees still had foliage, and there was a distinctly Autumnal snap in the air.
This is the lane that snakes its way up, out of the village from the church. Despite being a small, quiet lane, the road was surprisingly busy, with tractors passing every few minutes or so.
I always enjoy sketching stone walls; this one illustrates the need to reduce details as walls recede away from you, which helps to reinforce the illusion of space and depth within the scene.

ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWING
Almost all watercolour paintings produced by Peter Woolley are developed from pencil
sketches made on-site or in the studio. In the course of that development, further working sketches
are often produced in order to explore the subject and work towards a final, satisfactory
composition. This drawing is a unique document; if it has been used in the process of creating a finished watercolour, it may contain marks of handling or even spots of watercolour. Such marks should not considered flaws; instead, they should be thought of as an integral part of the character of the drawing. To protect
its integrity, the artist has signed and dated it on the reverse.
This original drawing has been produced on 160lb smooth, white paper, with a 2B graphite pencil. For drawing dimensions, please see the main information panel above. The price quoted is for the drawing to be supplied to you unframed, in protective packaging with rigid backing panel, ready to take to a framer. A quote for framed work will be provided on request.
