Description
Several miles south-west of Buxton, in the Peak District, nestled in the meandering hollows of Axe Edge Noor, is the meeting point of three counties; Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire, a location known as Three Shires Head. It is also known locally as Three Shire Heads, as in ‘the heads of three shires’; an anomaly that I suspect originates from a spelling mistake (that’s how it used to appear on the OS maps). In fact, I must confess that ‘Three Shire Heads’ is how I have always known it.
The watercourse flowing through the scene is the River Dane, and the pool below the bridge is known as Panniers Pool.
