If you look on the map, it appears as quite an innocuous black dotted line, suggesting a path of sorts, but one that carries no guarantees in terms of navigability. We chose it in favour of the longer way round, following the ‘Cumbrian Way’ bridlepath. Considering this was meant to be a relatively easy day’s hike, it was actually a lot steeper than we’d imagined it to be.

Having said that, a tough climb can make the views even sweeter, and this view across to Pike O’ Stickle (that’ll be the tall, prominent crag on the very tip of the hill) made it all worthwhile. As views go, this is one that encapsulates the Langdale area – and more specifically ‘The Langdale Pikes’ – rather well.

As for my choice of painting it as a line and wash; my decision on these matters is often a last minute one. Primarily, I’m always aiming for subjects to paint in pure watercolour, but if a subject dictates to me something otherwise, then I’m happy to go along with that. The moment I saw this, I sort of knew it had to be a line and wash.

This painting was featured in my YouTube ‘Great Langdale’ series, which can be viewed here.

This painting is supplied unframed, and will be dispatched in protective packaging with rigid backing panel, ready to take to a framer.

One of the things I remember most about our visit to this location was the tough climb up to this point from Stake Gill.
