Derwentwater, from Catbells

Derwentwater, the third largest lake in The Lake District by area, after Windermere and Ullswater, sits at the very top end of Borrowdale. The nearest town is Keswick (from which a very good bus service is ready to transport non-drivers to key locations in the area), and the two large hills in the distance are Skiddaw (to the left) and Blencathra (to the right). My wife and I enjoy visiting this area because there is a very good caravan and motorhome site situated just off the bottom right-hand corner of the photo, which is very basic, hidden in the trees and with good access to the surrounding fells.

Relative to most of the surrounding fells, Catbells is quite modest, at only 1480 feet. Being so close to Keswick makes it one of the more accessible peaks, so if you visit in the summer months you can expect to be accompanied by large swathes of walkers. If you’re new to the area, and fell-walking in general, then Catbells has long been considered a good ‘starter’ fell. Despite being rated as quite an easy climb, however, I should mention the fact that the very last section does get quite steep, which must come as something of a surprise to those unfamiliar with it.
