Description
The summit of Helm Crag, overlooking the village of Grasmere and flanked by Easdale, features several notable rocks. In the distance, you can see the two rocks – one larger than the other – that make up ‘The Lion and the Lamb’. The large rock in the foreground is known as ‘The Howitzer’, the top of which forms the true absolute summit of Helm Crag. It’s worth noting that the top of the Howitzer was the only summit in the Lake District that the late great Alfred Wainwright never managed get to the top of. It isn’t a massive rock, but it is a tricky climb; I’ve done it a few times, and I can confirm that it is a little hairy (as I get older, I find I’m now content to stand at the bottom and watch others try).
As a lover of drawing rocks, this one takes some beating. I love its many surfaces and the textures, formed from lichen and guano, that cover them. How can anyone not like rocks?…`
