Description
When I’m out travelling in new towns and cities (I say ‘new’… by that, I mean ‘new to me’), I’m always mostly interested in the oldest parts, because that’s where you get a feel for the origins of the place, and the cultural underbelly. Churches and cathedrals fall into that category. Architecturally, they are always interesting, but they are also, almost always, bursting with potentially good painting subjects.
Church interiors present us with a series of unique challenges. They are often, but not always, complex in their design, with multiple arches, domes and pillars, not to mention all many ornamentations that generally adorn a church’s interior walls.
Every one is unique, of course, but they do all have one thing in common; one thing that is crucial to the process of watercolour, particularly when it comes to architecture, and that’s light. How light falls upon a subject will often define the underlying mood of a space. It might be from large windows, or it might also be from sconces or lanterns. It might also be reflected in the highly polished surfaces of wood or marble.
This painting is supplied unframed, and will be dispatched in protective packaging with rigid backing panel, ready to take to a framer.
