Description
The village of Patterdale is located on the Western shore of Ullswater, in the Lake District. We had a few campervan days there on a small site at Patterdale Hall. It’s a ‘CL’, which means Certified Location, and is limited to only five pitches; situated right alongside Grisedale Beck, it is an ideal base from which to explore the area.
We were only there for three days, two of which it rained almost continuously. This reduced our aspirations somewhat, with regards to any major hikes we had planned, so instead, we enjoyed watching the beck rise and fall several times (some footage of which I’ve included in the video), and decided to keep our walks relatively short.
On the first afternoon of our arrival, we opted for a leisurely walk up the valley, towards the tarn (but nowhere near that far), where the landscape changes quite dramatically. As the valley opens out, trees become quite scarce, and the area is dominated by the high crags and rocky ridges. With St Sunday Crag rising up steeply on one side, and Helvellyn brooding like a sleeping giant on the other, the young, babbling beck meandered and weaved its way down towards the village of Patterdale.
At the furthest point, as we were enjoying the views and made our plans to head back to the village, this stone sheepfold took my eye. I walked around it, in order to see it from every direction and was suddenly captivated by the view back down the valley. With the walls of the old stone enclosure providing me with the perfect foreground, I felt all my Christmases and Birthdays had come at once – I’d found an interesting composition without really looking for it.
