Winter in the Yorkshire Dales can be a tough and challenging time for those that live and work there.

For the landscape artist, snowfall transforms the area into something quite magical. The landscape is reduced to its simplest forms, providing drama and impact in the most unlikely of scenes. This is the road into Hawes, which has been ploughed to keep the local traffic moving; it only takes a blizzard or two to block it up again, though. With snowfall reinforcing an emphasis on values, pencil is the ideal medium with which to capture a scene like this.
