George Street, Sydney (Original Watercolour)

Description

My last cruise assignment (running on-board painting workshops) before the pandemic struck a blow to the heart of the cruising industry (and, in fact, a fatal blow to CMV, the operator I was working for), was in January/February 2020. We sailed from London Tilbury to Sydney, Australia on the first leg of MV Columbus’ World Tour. The Columbus never did complete its world tour, but my wife and I did get the opportunity to spend a fantastic couple of days in Sydney before flying home to London.

This view of St George Street, in downtown Sydney, was painted as part of an online demonstration, extracts of which can be seen on my YouTube Channel.

What I hope is that I’ve managed to capture some of the character of the location. The large dominant building to the left is the Queen Victoria Building, a magnificent structure that is now a shopping centre. The objective was to try and demonstrate how complex buildings can be simplified and approached in a loose, spontaneous way.
