Description
A myriad of rooftops in Portugal’s capital city, Lisbon, captured in a loose line and wash style.
I started out with a very loose, almost abstract, watercolour wash, before establishing the general layout of the roofs. In this way, the scene can be built up organically, hopefully in such a way that neither the ink nor the watercolour are dominant – when it works out well, it becomes a sort of ‘fusion’ of the two mediums.
What I really love about painting a scene like this is that it is a journey, with unexpected surprises along the way; I also love the way that, despite the chaotic nature of the subject, each element is visually connected to, and supported by, those elements next to it.
This painting is supplied unframed, and will be dispatched in protective packaging with rigid backing panel, ready to take to a framer.
