Description
My wife and I love visiting RSPB places. St Aidan’s Nature Reserve in West Yorkshire is one such site, which is definitely worth the visit if you’re into studying birds and wildlife at first hand. We had a lovely day there, even if the birds themselves were not really behaving themselves. It seemed like every time I pointed a camera at them, they would turn away from me… maybe it was something I’d said…
There is also a massive digger there – right next to the car park when you go in, that is absolutely impossible to miss, and simply not to be ignored.
The Bucyrus Eries 1150-B – affectionately also known as ODDBALL – was built in 1946 in Milwaukee in the United States and brought to the UK by the National Coal Board in 1954. It operated at several different opencast coal sites from Wales through to Cannock, before coming to St Aidan’s in 1974, and continued to work until 1988. Today, it stands as The Sunshine Miners Landmark Memorial.
I’d set out to find birds – and found them – but the excavator was a bonus
