Description

Despite having known about Wistman’s Wood for many years, this was the first real opportunity of actually visiting the place, on our way to a weeks travelling in Cornwall. I’m pleased to say that it didn’t disappoint. You could describe it as ‘Gnarly Tree Heaven’, mostly consisting of oak trees, but also including a smattering of Rowan, holly and hawthorn.

Contorted branches crouch and intertwine amid a carpet of moss-covered boulders, all giving something of an ethereal feel to the wood. Most of the trees reach no higher than 15 feet and the oldest specimens are believed to be around 500 years old. By all accounts, the ancient wood is home to roughly 120 different species of lichen.

A YouTube presentation featuring my process using watercolour pencils, can be seen here.

This painting is supplied unframed, and will be dispatched in protective packaging with rigid backing panel, ready to take to a framer.
