Bronte Bridge (Original Watercolour)

Description

At the start of any year, specifically January and February, my wife and I tend to look for local walks so that we don’t have to travel too far. The weather can be unpredictable at that time of year, and the daylight hours are short, so less travel time makes sense. In the hierarchy of local hiking choices, there are several options for us, situated as close to Wharfedale, Malham and Ilkley as we are, for instance, but we’re also only a short drive from Howarth and the moors beyond, where a small local (free) car park provides a good base for a short winter’s walk/

South Dean Beck is one such location, which flows down from Withins Heights to Lower Laithe reservoir, a particularly beautiful valley hidden amongst the sprawling moorlands, where there are rocks and waterfalls a-plenty. The small stone bridge here is known locally as Bronte Bridge; unsurprisingly, the spot was known to have been a favourite with the Bronte sisters.
